Chase pulled his Ford behind Camaraâs Hummer parked in front of the dilapidated house. The shingles were all but gone from the roof, the steps needed repair, three of the windows were boarded, the paint had peeled, and the railing on the porch was missing in several places. The place was devoid of grass. The only color was a variety of bright wild flowers dotting the yard. Pine trees surrounded the house.
Looking for Camara, Chase scanned the volunteer workers from Living Water Fellowship. When he didnât see her, disappointment shrouded him. He was hoping to get a chance to speak to her alone today because sheâd avoided him since their date. He wasnât about to let his dadâs negative attitude stop him from getting to know Camara. On Pastor Stephansâs advice, Chase had confronted his father and let him know that his vendetta against the Coles was just thatâhis. And Chase would no longer be a part of it. Nor would he let him control his life any longer.
That hadnât gone over well, but he couldnât worry about it right now.
Chase grabbed a can of paint and a brush from the church van. In hopes of finding her, he headed around the back of the house and spotted her standing by herself stripping old paint from a window.
He quietly walked up beside her. âCan we talk?â
Camara held her scraper in midair. She didnât turn. Chase held his breath and wondered if she would bolt.
After what seemed like an eternity, she faced him. She removed her Chevy cap, tucked her hair behind her ears, and looked him in the eye. âLook, I donât want your dad seeing us together.â She put her cap back on her head.
âMy dad isnât gonna come clear out here. Besidesââ
âThe point isnât whether or not your dad will come out here, Chase.â She set the scraper on the windowsill. âYour dad hates me.â She closed her eyes briefly, picked up the scraper, and started removing the peeled paint again.
Chase grabbed her free hand. âListen to me, Camara.â He turned her face toward his. âI donât care what my dad thinks. Iâm a grown man. His problems with your family are just thatâhis problems. Not mine.â He searched her eyes. âI care about you, and I want to see where this relationship will go.â
âThere can be no relationship. Donât you see that?â Her big brown eyes looked sad. Or maybe it was just wishful thinking on his part that she was as bothered about the situation as he was. âYour dad will make both of our lives miserable.â
âI wonât let him, Camara. Iâm not afraid ofââ
Camara cut him off. âI donât want a rift coming between you and your father because of me. Family is too important.â
Her concern for him touched Chase deeply. It proved she did care.
âAh, Cammy.â He pulled her into his arms. She tried to push away from him, but he held her tighter and whispered against her ear. âI appreciate your considering how our relationship will affect me and my dadâs, but.
